Business Spotlight: Iron Wheel
Justin Sonnentag was no stranger to the bike world—with over 20 years in the cycling industry, he knew bikes inside and out. But after settling in Hayden, he saw a gap. There wasn’t a single bike shop in town—or even nearby—for families to get quick repairs or tune-ups without driving to Steamboat. That’s when he decided to open Iron Wheel Bicycle Service, a laid-back, community-focused shop that offers approachable service right in the heart of Hayden.
Justin describes Iron Wheel as something that came naturally—he had the experience, the tools, and most importantly, the desire to give back to a place he calls home. “If I can create a couple jobs, help Hayden become more sustainable, and make it easier for families to keep their kids on bikes—then it’s worth it,” he says. “This shop isn’t about making money. It’s about making something that lasts here.”
Since opening its doors just about a year ago, Iron Wheel has already become a destination. Riders have come from Craig, Baggs, and even Meeker—two riders actually met there for the first time after recognizing each other from Strava. “It’s those kinds of moments that make this all worth it,” Justin says.
Iron Wheel specializes in basic repairs—flat tires, tube replacements, wheel truing, and everyday maintenance—making it easy for parents and kids to swing by without pressure. New this year, Justin is proud to announce that Iron Wheel is now a licensed Kona Bicycle dealer, giving Hayden locals access to a respected brand without leaving town.
Thinking about buying a used bike online? Justin also offers a unique and free service—you can meet the seller at the shop, and he’ll inspect the bike at no charge, making sure it’s safe and in good condition before you commit.
Iron Wheel’s summer hours are still being finalized, but Justin plans to be open most weekends and during Thursday evenings at the Walnut Street Market.
When he’s not at the shop, Justin is spending time with his two kids or out riding and supporting the local bike community. To him, Iron Wheel is more than a business—it’s a way to invest in the town he loves.
