Hayden Historic Walking Tour

Porter Smart & James Thompson arrived in the early 1870’s and found the valley to be suitable for settling.  The post office was established in 1875, and was named for surveyor F.V. Hayden, whose surveying party had camped here in 1873.  By 1890, the tiny town of Hayden boasted a restaurant, saloon, a blacksmith shop, mercantile, and a log school house.  In 1894, William Walker, who had arrived in 1881, laid out the townsite with Ephus Donelson.  Most of the business buildings on Walnut St.  were built prior to 1910!

Hayden is fortunate and unique to have so many original buildings still standing.  This tour will take you from the train depot through the shady residential areas and into the business section of town.  Enjoy your visit to this quiet little backwater hamlet, and catch a glimpse of life in a truly Western town.
